Block Club Summer Bucket List

Block Club Bucket List: Before Summer Ends

We’re more than halfway through summer 2015, which hardly seems possible—so many hamburgers to eat, and so little time! Alas, this little world spins on, and so must our summer. And though there’s so much to look forward to come autumn in Buffalo, we’re not quite ready to consider cooler days just yet. Mondays in the Block Club office have been full with fun stories of weekend camping, barbecues, road trips, bicycle riding and bonfires, amid plan-making for adventures in tucked-away corners of this continent and beyond.

So, though summer’s half gone, there’s still plenty left to enjoy. We checked in on our summer bucket lists—the sections devoted to the simple pleasures of summer in Buffalo—and share the stuff that would put the cherry on top of this beautiful season in our city:

Biking to Batavia Julie, designer
“I’d like to ride my bike out to my parents’ place in Batavia. Ideally, I’d Evel Knievel off one of the docks at the end, but I’d also be happy to just hang out and barbecue with my folks.”

Outer Harbor AdventurePat S., project manager
“I’d love to finally take the new bike ferry across the river and ride my bike along the outer harbor trails. I just can’t seem to find right weekend to do it!”

Cheese 101 – Margaret, editorial assistant
“I’d love to take a class out on the patio at Nickel City Cheese. I guess I can officially consider myself an adult, because learning about home-made mozzarella on a patio some evening after work sounds completely dreamy.”

A Day at the Beach – Ryan, designer
“Honestly, just spending some time at the beach. The local beaches on Lake Erie are incredibly beautiful, and we’re so lucky to have them close by. There’s something magical about swimming in the lake and looking up across the water to see the Buffalo skyline, just across the bay that forms at the Eastern tip of the lake.”

Button Up the Big Day Dave, director of business development
“I’m trying to get our wedding plans finalized by the end of August. That would be a luxury beyond imagination.”

Lakeshore Long Weekend Ben, copywriter
“I’m still itching to get to a beach or lake house to spend a long weekend with friends: waking up early and sitting on a porch, watching the water, cooking dinner with friends, games, bonfires, ice cream, staying up all night and not wearing shoes. I must make this happen!”

Take a Hike – Patrick, principal
“I’d like to go hiking in a few of the state parks like Letchworth, Watkins Glen, Devils Hole, Allegany State Park.”

Backyard Big Screen – Steve, project manager
“I really want to get ahold of a projector to screen a movie in our backyard for the kiddos. I have a line of bushes in my backyard that I’d like to attach a white bed sheet to so that it could act as the screen. “Ghostbusters” would be the preferred film to watch, but “Frozen” might win out in the end.”

Pedal and Paint – Tim, designer
“I’d like to try and get in another 100-mile bike ride and finish painting my porch.”

Enjoy the BackyardBrandon, creative director
“At the beginning of summer, we converted our backyard from a shady, muddy garden with grass that grew sparsely to a hardscaped patio. We gained additional living and dining space, and it requires significantly less maintenance than before. We have just one more project to wrap up this coming weekend and it’ll be done! With all of the rain we’ve had, I want to spend as much of my summer relaxing and entertaining in our new backyard.”
