Emotional Wayfinding in Buffalo
When I learned that Stephen Powers was commissioned to work with the Albright-Knox’s Public Art Initiative, I did a double take. I am a big fan of his work and how he includes the community in his process.
I first fell in love with Powers’ work when I discovered his series of murals entitled “A Love Letter For You,” a project he created in his hometown of Philadelphia. I was first drawn to the typographic style, thoughtful copy and design of the installations. The messages were powerful and playful, and some of them could make you blush. As I pored over his work, I learned more about the “Love Letter” project and thought it was genius that the murals are best viewed and enjoyed on the El train–a Philly public transit line–adding a little bit of color and brotherly love to what would otherwise be a mundane commute.
The Powers project slated for Buffalo is titled “Emotional Wayfinding“ and will include more than 100 metal signs distributed throughout Erie County based on content drawn from conversations with locals. You can participate here by submitting what you love and hate about Buffalo.
It always amazes me how some folks are able to take simple paint and canvas, and create something so impactful and positive in a community. I look forward to seeking out and seeing his work throughout the area in the coming months.
