Hear Ye, Hear Ye: Smart Municipal Signage

For me, the words “municipal signage” have never conjured up supporting adjectives like: beautiful, well designed or compelling.

Municipal signage has always been utilitarian. Perhaps so utilitarian that construction permits or public notices can fade into the sidewalk noise. Why should anything from a city government be anything other than efficient or pragmatic?

This is no longer the case in Atlanta. Branding agency Matchstic has taken to task the notion that bureaucratic bulletins can’t be attractive.

Au contraire—signage is always meant to attract.

Matchstic was challenged by the Atlanta Department of Planning to create a signage system that would make a passerby take pause and notice. The end result is a captivating, colorful series of signs that any design-savy Atlantan would be proud of.
