Dispatch: Creativity and the Country
It’s hard to believe that this is already my fifth week in Paris, and that next week is the last week of my residency. My fourth week here was very productive, in the office and out in the world.
As luck would have it, I happened to be here during a city-wide design celebration called D-Days. Last weekend I went to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, where they were hosting the main exhibition of work, a body of innovative projects at the crossroads between design, craft, engineering and art. Much of it was interactive and it was especially cool to see children there with their parents having a blast with the hands-on pieces. My favorite piece was a group project centered around the ocean, the focal point being a huge slab that was carved and polished to look like the surface of the sea. It was beautiful. Concurrently, on an upper floor of the museum, there was an exhibition of recent graphic design acquisitions, largely posters and printed books, that I spent a long time taking in.
During the week, through my new friends at Bonhomme, I was able to meet with Arnaud Depaul, president and co-founder of the agency 84.Paris, at his apartment near Père Lachaise. We had a lovely evening taking in the sunset and the ridiculously beautiful view from his terrace, as we talked about the birth and growth of 84, now a 30-plus employee-strong agency producing incredible work for Greenpeace, BMW, Adidas, Google and more. Arnaud is passionate about his work and his vision. We talked a lot about how process evolves as an agency grows, planning for the future and not being afraid to be bold and put yourself and your ideas into PR. Thank you Arnaud! I am very grateful for the hospitality, the laughs and an evening of great conversation.
This weekend I was busy again visiting exhibitions (and restaurants!) around the city. Yesterday was a beautiful day and I got out to the country to visit a small village, a castle and go for a hike. It was a quiet, contemplative day, and a relaxing way to finish a big week in Paris.
