The Purple Prince of Pantone
Earlier this week Pantone and the Prince Estate announced a new color to add to the global color authority: “Love Symbol #2,” a specific shade of purple inspired by the Purple One’s custom purple Yamaha piano.
“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” said Troy Carter, Entertainment Advisor to Prince’s Estate.
Prince has long had an impact on the design world. When he was known as “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince,” he changed his name to a logo called “The Love Symbol.” This symbol made it difficult for journalists to write about, since it did not exist on any keyboard. So he created his own font, a text file, and mailed it out on floppy discs to writers around the world to install on their computers.
Like his music, I’m sure this new shade of purple will reign for generations to come.
